Having worked in marketing for a few years, yet still not possessing the skills I knew I needed to get me over my next career hump, I started considering grad school. My first inclination was to look at MBA programs--like both of my brothers had done before me--but I dug a little deeper to see whether that would be the best way to go.
First off, I wanted to avoid the finance and numbers-heavy curriculum of an MBA program, as I was much more interested in marketing and the creative side of business. The IMC program fit perfectly: there was still a finance class, as well as a couple statistics and data mining classes, so I knew I would have a good foundation. Yet the program on a whole was geared toward a much more creative bend, which fit in with my goals.
My next step was to talk to professionals that were doing what I wanted to be doing when I finished the program. Their feedback was that an IMC degree would not only provide a good foundation, but might actually be preferable to an MBA from a hiring standpoint--one said that "MBAs are a dime a dozen, and you need to get something different to make you stand out." After talking to a couple people with IMC degrees who concurred, and had positive things to say about the program, my mind was made up.
You can find plenty of things to complain about as far as this program is concerned, as well as plenty of things that are laudable; much as I imagine you could with ANY graduate school program. Ultimately, though, I basically got into it for the connections and relationships that I would form, as well as for the prestige of listing a master's degree from Northwestern on my resume. The world of marketing is evolving and changing faster than anyone can imagine; and while some of the knowledge I have picked up over the past two years may soon become obsolete, the contacts, relationships, and membership in the Northwestern family never will.

My path was a tiny bit different: There was the "Check Yourself Moment," which I referred to in my initial interview because I was way too comfortable with Kerri. (I was certain they wouldn't call after that! Don't try this at home, kids.)
I am sure I would have continued on my merry way never really recognizing any need for a Masters degree at all. However, one of my parents was very interested in seeing me go on to graduate school at Northwestern and after the aforementioned moment, I was too.
I researched every possibility available in Chicago and created one heck of a spreadsheet! MBA, Masters of Communications, Advertising and PR, Tuition, courses, pre-reqs...you name it, it was on there! Then, after some info sessions and professor meetings I realized that IMC was the best option for me, and if you're going to apply somewhere start with the best.
Lucky for me, I didn't have to look any further. Now I know some of the most talented people on the planet and my colleagues who went elsewhere are just sad they can't do it over again.
Being partial to the IMC program myself, I think one of its greatest advantages is that the degree is so flexible. An MBA is an MBA is an MBA - everybody knows what it is and the program is no different if you take it at Harvard than if you take it at a community college.
But an IMC degree has many faces. You can dip into your IMC konwledge when you need to put on your marketing hat but also your organizational behavior hat; data mining hat; finance hat; advertising hat; crisis communications hat; new media hat; emerging technologies hat; customer loyalty hat; word of mouth hat, etc. I don't know how many MBA students have recently set through a real-time demo of Second Life to discuss the possibilities of marketing to Avatars, our society's aspirations personified...
Point is, MBA is a victim of predictability. Its rigid coursework structure doesn't leave room for adaptation to the changing times. And times are changing fast! And I can think of no better program to adjust to the ever-changing corporate landscape than this one.
I am curently exploring both a traditional MBA with emphasis in marketing and the NU IMC program. I agree with the posts here, but I've also talked with recruiters and marketing professionals (specifically in brand management) that feel an IMC degree is difficult to explain and sometimes not viewed as a serious equivalent to a highly-regarded MBA program.
For the time and money one invests in a graduate program, I certainly wouldn't want to complete the degree and find certain doors closed (e.g., brand management, brand consulting) because I didn't choose the right program.
